Jen Cairns – Active Schools Coordinator Graeme Cluster
My job is to get as many children as possible physically active through sport and physical activity across all 6 primary schools in the Graeme Cluster. I work with staff, volunteers and coaches to provide a varied programme and create experiences both in and out with school hours. We provide numerous sporting events for children to compete and enjoy sport out of school in some of the best venues in central Scotland. Here is some of the great work that has been done in Victoria Primary School.
Victoria Primary school have fully embraced and engaged in the Active Schools programme, ensuring health and wellbeing as well as sport and competition are a high priority for their children and staff. Over the past two years we have established two basketball squads, one of which now play at a highly competitive level within the Primary School Basketball League and the other play at a competitive cluster level. This has created a development pathway within the school allowing players to benefit from coaching from Primary 5 upwards. Over the past two years VPS has seen 3 pupils progress into Falkirk Fury basketball squads.
The setup of the school football team has allowed many players to compete in local competitions, experience matches and meet professional players. The team now train twice a week, have new kit and are sponsored by a local business.
The cross country team was re-established to allow a larger number of children to attend regular training sessions on a weekly basis and be part of the Cross Country League programme and Championships. Over 30 pupils each week now train.
