Health and Wellbeing
At VPS we believe that positive relationships and good health and wellbeing are essential for successful learning and happy lives for our pupils. Learning in our health and well-being curriculum includes physical education, food and health, substance misuse, relationships, sexual health, social and life skills and is dependent on the age and stage. A range of resources are used to teach the knowledge and skills essential to allow for informed choices including the Ice Pack-Knowing Me, Knowing You. This resource helps pupils improve their understanding of well-being and what they value in themselves and others as well as developing skills and personal qualities such as resilience, confidence and empathy.
In health and well-being lessons all pupils are supported in using the SHANARRI (Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible, Included) wellbeing indicators to allow them to identify their needs and allow them to reach their full potential in learning.
At VPS we are a nurturing school and adopt the 6 principles of nurture. These are:
- Children's learning is understood developmentally
- The classroom offers a safe base
- The importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing
- Language is a vital means of communication
- All behaviour is communication
- The importance of transition in children's lives
